What is boerewors?

Boerewors pronounced as Boo-ruh-vors is a South African sausage that is mostly grilled.
The name boerewors comes from Afrikaans words Boer which means "farmers" and wors which means " initially boerewors means farmers sausage

How boerewor is made

Boerewors is made of 90% meat and 10% spices, these spices mostly include preservatives, vinegar and salt.mostly the sausage contains beef but it can also contain pork.

The spices or seasoning includes nutmeg, vinegar,salt, coriander and black pepper.the salt and vinegar act as preservatives.

Boerewors have become popular in many African countries,they are sold in many food outlets including supermarkets like choppies, ShopRite, Melissa etc.boerewors are mostly prepared during  a grilling party but you can still deep fry them,or cook them in ovens,bottom line is,the boerewors will still be delicious.

I served my boerewors on a wooden plate and semi-cooked baked potato wedges and tomatoes.
this boerewors recipe is all you need for that perfect breakfast,lunch or dinner.
It's easy and quick to make.

  • 6 Medium Potatoes
  • Sausage
  • Oil
  • Tumeric
  • Salt
  • Lemon
  • Parsley

1. Wash,peel and cut Potatos into wedges 
2. Soak potatoes in ice cold water for 15 minutes 
3. Boil the potatoes,add a teaspoon of tumeric and salt then drain. 
4. Place the wedges on a baking pan.preheat oven to 170° . 
5. Give both the Wedges and sausage a lightly coating of cooking oil. 
6. Insert a kebab stick/skewer into the boerewors to maintain moisture and flavor. 
7. Grill for 20 minutes 
8. Grill the sausage for 10 minutes on both sides. 
9. Squeeze lemon over both the wedges and sausage a minute before taking them out of the oven. 
10. Sprinkle some Parsley over wedges and serve warm.
